Annual Report for the Hillsdale High School Science Unit This passed year was very successful for Hillsdale High School's Science Unit. Funding was obtained; students fared well in academic competition; curriculum was enhanced and quality teachers was employed. Faculty Appointments Two knew science teachers, Ms. Anne Hartman and Mr. Terry Nolan, were hired for the upcoming school year. Ms. Hartman has a B.S. degree from Clark College, where she majored in biology. Anne taught for 3 years at Reynolds High before coming to Hillsdale. Mr. Nolan has a B.S. degree with a major in environmental science and an M.S. degree from Garrett University. Terry worked for five years as a environmental auditor for Environmental Services, Inc., before entering teaching. Funding The Science unit head served as project director for the $75,000 grant received form the Morris Foundation. The grant funded the purchase of an Essentials Learning System (a computer-managed instructional system for studying chemistry, biology, and physics) and computer hardwear used to run the softwear. Student Organizations The science unit chartered an Environmental Service Club for students who want to do community service that will improve the environment in are neighborhood parks and trails. Mrs. Margaret Homewood agreed to sponsor this organization. More than 30 students has joined. The Physics Club was voted the outstanding student chapter in our region in May. The volunteer effort of the Club's members was a chief reason for this recognition. Mr William DeBolt sponsors this organization. Advisory Boards The Science Education Advisory Board and it's subcommittees met throughout the past year. Several members of this board participated actively in writing the proposal that was funded by the Morris Foundation. Other members participated in preparing the strategic planning document for the science unit. An Cooperative Education Advisory Board was formed and meet for the first time in May. Mr. Joseph Lane, owner of Baker's Sporting Goods, played a significant role in attracting community leaders to serve on this board. Awards and Recognition Dan Wently, President of Hillsdale High’s Physics Club, was selected as the Susan Baker Award recipient. The award was presented at commencement at the end of the last school year. Six members of the Physics Club competed successfully at the Lewis County Science Fair and received cash awards for there efforts. The six students are Matt Mertly, Juan Perez, Mary McCoy, Janet Glance, Adora Sanchez, and Jim Venturi. Conferences All science teachers attended the Tri-County Science Education Association's Spring Conference, held in March at the Hoover inn. Ms. Annette Eddy conducted a workshop on science an technology standards and Mr. Steve Sherman led one of the roundtable discussions. Mrs. Marsha Jaruszewicz represented the Science unit at all Hillsdale Chamber of Commerce meetings. Mr. Jeff Cates represented the unit at the Science Education Roundtable during the past year.
